5 ways to clear the clutter and simplify your life

Here’s what I know for sure: Doing and having less, as well as creating and sticking to a few key habits that help pare back and simplify my routine, are what have made my day-to-day life feel delightful and satisfying. I now have room to breathe and the space for magic to drop in when it’s least expected.

While I’m still working on it (confession: there were tears of overwhelm just last week, lol), stripping life back so that less truly does feel like more, is what gets us on track for living the purposeful, intentional life we came here for.

What follows are some tips and suggestions that have helped pull me out of overwhelm (most days anyway, lol), lower my anxiety, and get more of the stuff done that magnetises me to the life I came here for.

I’ve focused on 5 key areas of life, the:
•    Mental
•    Physical
•    Social & Emotional
•    Financial
•    Spiritual

I’ve also created a  30 Day Simplify Your Life Challenge to help support you, that will be published later this month, so please be on the lookout for that.

YOUR MENTAL SPACE

Decide You Want a Simpler Life. For me, simplifying life starts with a decision. Decide you want a life of ease and flow. Once you make this decision, use it to gently guide yourself back whenever your day or week begins to feel crazy. Ask yourself in these moments, “How can I make this situation easier for myself?”

And listen to the answers that come. When we come from a place of calm and positivity, instead of stress and exertion, life flows.

Here are 2 mindset tweaks that also help:

1) Trust there’s time: When you wake each morning, take 5 deep breaths and set an intention for your day that has you quietly achieving what you need to get done. For example, “The 3 things I want to get done today will get completed easily, without stress or fuss.”

Mentally say it on repeat throughout the day.

2) Eliminate Negative Nancy thinking and negative words from your vocabulary: They’re exhausting and get you nowhere. Instead, change your “I have to’s”, into “I GET to’s” and cultivate a belief that there’s joy to be had in everything you do.

Bolstering your inner calm is priceless to the way you feel. Small shifts in your mindset equate to big changes in the energy you have for chasing your dreams!

On the more practical side, Get. Enough. Sleep. Being well-rested is essential for clearing mental clutter, and living a life that’s on point for the one you came here for. You’ll find lots of tips for getting the deep quality sleep you need, in the article “How to Get Good Sleep

YOUR PHYSICAL SPACE

When we declutter our physical space and clean up the way we eat, we immediately feel lighter, calmer, more energetic and focused.

Tidy Your Space, Transform Your Life. Who else out there have piles of “things” you swore you’d “get to” months ago?! Believe it or not, there is an art to decluttering your physical space. One that once learned is said to transform your life!

Here’s A Best Book On Simplifying Your Life: if you’re ready for a deep dive on this subject, then grab yourself a copy of the #1 New York Times bestselling guide to decluttering your home and the inspiration for the hit Netflix show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising by Marie Kondo (2014).

The basics of the book: think of decluttering your home by category (beginning with clothes, then books, papers, miscellaneous items, and finally sentimental items), instead of room-by-room. Keeping things only IF they spark JOY.

When It Comes To Your body if you’ve ever thought that doing your taxes is easier than working out how to eat healthy, here’s a tip for simplifying that too:

Eat Clean and More Plant-based Food.
Make this easier for yourself by keeping the following in mind:

1) Eat more whole food that comes out of the ground, off the land, or out of the sea. Worry about how nutritionally dense your food is, not the calories.

2) Eat less from a box, but when you must, read the label and choose things with the fewest ingredients… because no, bread does not need added sugar.

3) Aim to eat less meat and more plants (check out my upcoming 30-Day Challenge for practical tips)

And Meal Prep! As boring as it might sound, prepping meals in advance of when you need them is a saving grace when it comes to simplifying life.

YOUR SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL SPACE

Want to feel cleaner and clearer emotionally? Then strip back the way you use social media and connect with friends.

Stop In-Boxing For The First 60 Minutes of Your Day. This means not checking your emails, Facebook, Insta or other social media feeds.

Instead, take this time after waking to check in with yourself for the day. Ask what it is YOU want to achieve that day and the steps YOU need to take, to bring you closer to manifesting YOUR dreams.

By logging into email or social media first thing, we’re bombarded with everyone else’s agenda and what THEY want and need.

When we break the habit of beginning our day being reactive to other people’s needs, and instead take the time to decide what we want, and then act from that place, life not only feels easier and less stressful, we bring our internal compass and our A-game to achieving the life we came here for.

Another Best Book On Simplifying Your Life: If you’re ready to own your mornings, this is a must-read: The 5AM Club, By Robin Sharma (2018)

Change the Notification Settings on Your Phone / Computer: so you’re not alerted every time you receive a new email or social media message. Decide you’ll log-in to email only twice a day (for example), and check your social feeds once a day. And then only with intention, by asking yourself first “Why am I logging in now?” and putting a time limit on it.

This way you won’t lose yourself (and your emotions) to the air-brushed life our shiny influencers would have you believe you need.

Instead of texting or messaging back on forth with friends for any longer than a few minutes, simply hit the dial button and CALL THEM! Doing so will have you feeling connected in a way that fiddling on your phone never will.

Yep, going old school has its merits.

Simplify Your Life By Learning to Say NO. Got things to do that truly matter to you? Then listen up – the more commitments you agree to take on, the more you will slowly but surely crush your ability to do the stuff that matters most to you.

The truth is you’ll never find the hours you want "for you" if you’re people-pleasing and saying “yes” to everything that pops up. So the next time an invitation comes your way, ask yourself, “Do I really want to do this?”

If you do, great! Accept the invitation and enjoy yourself. But if you don’t, gracefully turn it down. If it feels right, be honest and say what you'll be working on instead. You’ll be amazed at how good this makes you feel.

YOUR FINANCIAL SPACE

If you want to grow your wealth and feel secure in knowing you’re taking care of yourself financially, then here are 2 decisions you can automate and simplify your life in the process.

1) Regular monthly bills
From basic utilities to the minimum amount on your credit cards, automate each of these bills to be paid on a particular date each month.

2) Savings & Retirement accounts

Deep down, you know how much an automatic allocation to separate savings and retirement accounts would work for you in the long run. So start them today!

Whether it's a pre-tax deduction or an automatic deduction to a retirement or savings account that's for your emergency or vacation fund, set it and forget it.

YOUR SPIRITUAL SPACE

Have you ever thought about how much time, energy, and money you waste when you make decisions from an unfocused and stressed-out mind?

One of the easiest, yet most potent, ways to simplify your life and live from ease and flow is to tend to a spiritual practice.

Here are 3 ways I like to do this:

1) Spend some alone time each week
, away from others, preferably by getting out into nature, device-free. Sometimes I take a journal, sometimes just my thoughts.

2) Allow Joy to be my GPS
. I’ve learnt to set up my life in a way that I listen to soul and do more of what brings her joy. For example, I free-lance instead of working in an office. And I have non-negotiables with my routine in place, such as juicing and working-out that must take place before I start work each day, and a set date-night that’s sacred each week.

3) Incorporate short daily meditation time. 5-10 minutes at the beginning or end of my day has added up over time to be the 1% of the day that makes the biggest difference.

Perhaps you’re already doing well in some of these areas of life, and reading this has inspired you to simplify others. Or maybe you currently feel so overwhelmed that you don’t know where to start.

Either way, I have a “30-Day Simplify You Life Challenge” coming out later this month to help you take action and open up the space that allows for ease, magic, and new opportunities to manifest in your life. Stay tuned!
